Dear Professor Magee. This is a very articulate, thoughtful and well-researched article. There is, as you allude to, a very significant indication that some of the foremost teachers/practitioners of mindfulness; say Thich Nhat Hanh for example, saw/see the human being's "craving for/addiction to" identity itself as the root cause for many of our ills. This is, of course, manifest in racial discrimination of all kinds and has led to catastrophic othering outcomes such as those currently manifesting in the Middle East and elsewhere. Thank you.
